Palmgren I: Vid traditionens källor. Doktorskonsert i Sibelius-Akademins konsertsal 11.2.

HBL Torsdag 13 februari 2020

My artistic doctoral degree examines the substantial pianistic output of Selim Palmgren (1878-1951). I will deepen our understanding on Palmgren as a piano composer and analyze the skill and the esthetic knowledge in his composition. I will explore the origins of the Finnish pianistic tradition and evaluate its substance and development. Furthermore, I will consider the significance of pianistic tradition in present day musical culture.

In my first doctoral concert I will introduce Palmgren’s teachers and their pianistic backgrounds. The pianistic environment around Palmgren is being displayed. The same milieu provided the settings for the development of Finnish pianistic tradition. The pianistic language of Palmgren was being inspired and supported by continental European pianistic tradition. His compositions provide a pathway between national and continental pianistic traditions.

The doctoral concert cycle is formed of five concerts. The second concert will focus on Palmgren’s chef d’oeuvre, the 24 Preludes and the Spring op. 27. I will reflect my interpretation of the Preludes on the historical interpretation by Tapani Valsta. In the third doctoral concert I will compare Palmgren’s pianistic creation with Schumann, Liszt, Albeniz and Bartók. The themes in my fourth concert are Lied and the Nordic influence. In the last, final concert I will examine the transformation of Palmgren’s musical style and the reformation of the Finnish pianistic tradition.
